Sawabi takes its name from an archipelago called the Sawabi Islands, located off the Djiboutian coast between Ethiopia and Yemen. This strait, linking the Red Sea to the Indian Ocean, is a crossroads of civilizations as old as commerce itself. It is a gateway to East Africa; from the Ethiopian highlands to the arid Afar and Somali plains and the Yemeni shores.
It is also through these waters that merchants from Arabia and Asia have, for centuries, carried their knowledge, treasures, spices, incense, and gradually spread their traditions and cultures. It is a personal history, an intimate land where the earth, navigation, and trade play a foundational role.
Sawabi therefore tells and rekindles the heritage, the blending, and the cultural richness of these regions of East Africa, the Arabian Peninsula, and Asia. Each creation (even when revisited or made more contemporary) preserves the essence of its origins and reveals something familiar.
Sawabi is a project with a nomadic spirit, calling for dialogue and invoking the memory of things, traditions, and peoples.
サワビ（Sawabi）は、エチオピアとイエメンの間、ジブチ沿岸沖に位置するサワビ諸島にその名を由来します。紅海とインド洋を結ぶこの海域は、交易と同じほど古い文明の交差点であり、エチオピア高原からアファールやソマリの乾いた平原、そしてイエメンの海岸へと続く東アフリカへの玄関口でもあります。
また、何世紀にもわたり、アラビアやアジアの商人たちがこの海を通り、知識や宝物、香辛料や香、そして彼らの伝統や文化を運び広めてきました。ここは、土地・航海・交易が根源的な役割を果たしてきた、個人的かつ親密な物語の地でもあります。
