Antique Beads Carnelian III
Before standardized currency, beads were worn, traded, and exchanged across continents. These antique beads (etched carnelians, aged glass, and stone) carry traces of the ancient networks they once traveled: from South Asia to the Horn of Africa, from desert caravans to coastal markets. Each bead holds its own story of movement and exchange. Offered individually, they are meant to be collected, worn, and recomposed; Echoing their past as both ornament and currency.
Etched Carnelian Bead Pendant
These antique carnelian beads each etched with distinct, time-softened patterns were crafted using an alkaline technique developed in ancient South Asia. Through this method, artisans applied a plant-based alkaline solution to the surface of the stone, which, when fired, left behind intricate white designs etched into the deep red carnelian.
Originating from India or Afghanistan, these beads traveled along vast trade networks that linked South Asia to East Africa via the Indian Ocean. They were exchanged, worn, and reworked across regions that now include Ethiopia, Sudan, and Kenya, and have been uncovered in archaeological sites from the Swahili coast to the Omo Valley.
Each bead is mounted simply, (either as a pendant for a necklace or as an earring) allowing the material and its layered history to speak for itself.
